I received mail for a previous resident. What should I do?
It’s common to receive mail addressed to someone who previously lived in your home. If that happens, here’s how to handle it:
1. Do Not Open the Mail
If the mail is not addressed to you or a current member of your household, please do not open it.
2. Mark It “Not at This Address”
On the front of the envelope, clearly write:
“Not at this address”
or
“Return to Sender – No Longer at This Address”
You may also cross out the barcode on the envelope to help prevent it from being re-delivered.
3. Place It Back in Your Mailbox
After marking the envelope, place it back in your mailbox with the flag up (if applicable) or drop it off at your local post office. The postal carrier will return it to the sender.
What About Junk Mail?
If the item is clearly advertising or marketing material, you may discard it. However, official mail from government agencies, financial institutions, courts, or other formal entities should always be marked and returned.
Does NestTenders Forward Mail?
No. Due to numerous federal and state laws, NestTenders does not collect, hold, or forward mail for former residents. Previous occupants, even property owners, are responsible for submitting a forwarding request with the United States Postal Service.
If you continue to receive a large volume of mail for a prior resident after several weeks of returning it, we recommend contacting your local post office for additional guidance.
